How many of us has seen the movie “War Room”? If you know you know. After watching that movie and being moved by the Spirit to create my own “Prayer closet.” I immediately went to my office and purged anything that could be removed out of there and made a small space for me on the floor to crawl into. At the time I wasn’t eight months pregnant, so I was able to move in and out comfortably. But now my prayer corner has migrated to the office nook in the living room, the bed or couch. Honestly with this huge belly, it’s hard to stay put for more than 20 minutes in one spot.
But what’s so significant about a prayer corner or closet? Is it vital to our spiritual life to have a designated spot to meet with God, if we all know He’s everywhere?

Here’s how I see it.
Throughout our busy days, if we remember to check in with God, it’s typically like a, “hey what’s up God, hope you’re doing well,” or “Lord, it’s me, please help.” Which is perfectly okay, God understands that as mothers, we ALWAYS have something going on. That should never deter us from checking in with God periodically throughout the day. But imagine if that was the only level of communication with had with God…ever.
God tells us to "Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me." John 15:4.
Our relationship with God is a living and breathing one. Just like a best friend, husband or parent relationship, it requires some level of intentional communion. If we treated our loved without any intentional desire to be with them and only ever checked in, the emotional and friendship connection is sure to be lost.
However, when we encounter God in a personal, intimate and emotional way, our relationship with Him deepens and takes root into something more solid.
I believe that creating a special location within our homes, makes that intimate encounter even more beautiful and exciting!
Why Create a Prayer Corner?
As previously stated, creating a prayer corner invites intimacy with our Lord. A special place to meet and greet with God. As well as helps us get into a habit and routine of making a priority to meet with Jesus. Most likely this spot within your home is going to be somewhere you pass by on a daily basis so fixing your eyes on this spot creates a visual cue to prioritize spending time with God.
Choosing the Right Location
If you don’t have any kiddos around, you have so much more liberty within your home. The patio, the living room, the office, the laundry, an actual closet of your choice. Wherever you choose to make it a quiet and intimate setting.
But if you do have babies, depending on your comfort level, you could either allow them to be involved in your quiet time or wake up before they do. I try my best to wake up before my boys, even if it’s only for thirty minutes. Allowing myself to wake up with a cup of joe first and then try to pray without falling asleep again! 🙂
Some things to consider are lighting and privacy. Having a nice warm lighting with a small lamp or if you like the darker setting, a mood light like this one might help.

If you live in a much smaller location, window ledges and closet nooks also do wonders for the intimacy and peaceful setting.
Essential Elements for a Prayer Corner
Alright so these are subject to change depending on the location depending on your home. But some of the essentials to include are below.
- Surface or Base: like a small table, shelf, stool, or floor mat.
- Visual Focus: scripture wall art or spiritual quote.
- Prayer books: Bible, devotionals, or journals.

Adding Atmosphere
This could be anything that helps you create that warm and inviting feeling. Make it intentional and special. What helps you relax? Some options are below.
- Plants or flowers for natural beauty.
- Calming scents: incense, essential oils, or scented candles.
- Music or silence: ambient playlist or sound machine.
Or just keep the space free from clutter and distractions.
Making It a Habit
An Abott article released, “The popular 21/90 rule, echoed by many self-help leaders, states it takes 21 days to make a habit and 90 days for it to become a permanent lifestyle change.” This tidbit is crucial to understand since, most of us get discouraged after a few days when we
- A. stop making our prayer corner a daily priority.
- B. stop feeling excited because it begins to feel like a chore.
- C. stop all together because the “feelings” or “excitement” is gone.
But before you become discouraged, remember that
"We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame" Romans 5:3-5
Helpful tips to create this habit
- Set times for prayer or meditation
- Incorporate it into morning/evening routines
- Involve family members or create a shared prayer time
Conclusion
Wherever you decide your prayer corner or closet is going to be. Know that you are to embark a beautiful and intimate setting with God. It’s a spot where you’re going to shed a lot, a lot of tears. A spot where God’s presence will be waiting for you with eagerness. Don’t miss out!
Philippians 4:4 “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.”
